
Mrs. Gladys Ama Ayebea Hammond was born in Suhum in the year 1932, to late Opanyin Kwame Amoako Asare and late Madam Ama Sakyibea and was the first grandchild of the late Nana Aye Kofi, the Odikro of Suhum.
She did not have any surrounding towns. She was diligent at trading, and ensured there was complete work-life balance with her business dynamics and family life. formal education yet she was a very formidable and intelligent person. She trained and became a very successful seamstress. She was gifted with a strong retentive cognitive appeal. Though she could not write the names of people who owed her money from credit sales, she was always able to recall all those who owed her money, those who paid and the balance left on their accounts. She became a pillar of the family and was involved in key decision-making for the family, in consultation with her uncles and elders of her family where necessary.

She later developed a knee problem that worsened and caused her to be wheelchair-bound to facilitate her movement. Although her children would call or come to visit and go, old age and sickness had a toll on her. She lived in Suhum until her death on July 18, 2018, at a graceful age of 86 years. She was survived by 7 children, 19 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Those we love, don’t go away, they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard but always, still loved and still missed every day.
